Let's reduce our environmental impact thanks to Mossy Earth

Over the last few months, all over the planet we have witnessed a worsening of harmful effects caused by climate change in place. In the face of these environmental disasters, it is necessary to implement concrete actions, such as those undertaken since last year by us at Viva Digital through collaboration with Mossy Earth. Thanks to this association, in fact, we have the opportunity not only to plant new trees with the aim of offsetting our CO2 emissions, but also to support reforestation and biodiversity protection projects active in Europe and Africa. In particular, in recent months, we have chosen to support two active rewilding projects in Scotland.

Restoring riparian zones on Scotland's Glassie Farm

The increase in temperatures recorded in recent years and the worsening levels of pollution in Scottish waters represent a real problem for the animal and plant ecosystems that live near Glassie Farm. The team of experts coordinated by Mossy Earth studied this habitat and observed that beaver activity it is essential for the restoration of these riparian areas, as the dams they build are able to filter the water and protect the area from the negative effects caused by floods and droughts. To compensate for the absence of beavers in these areas, a system of artificial dams was designed which are inspired by those created by rodents and which for this reason have been called Beaver Dam Analogues (BDAs).

The project started in January with the construction of fences to protect native trees and shrubs; following the survey conducted between February and March for check for the presence of animal species such as pearl mussels and otters, in April the team of Mossy Earth started the installation of the first artificial dams. In the coming months, it is hoped that we will be able to observe the first positive results of this intervention.

The marine habitat of the Scottish Highlands needs our help

The European flat oyster variety represents a native mollusk that has populated the Scottish coasts for millennia. Once so abundant as to be called "the food of the poor", the flat oysters they currently exist only in isolated populations due to various environmental threats that have followed one another during the XNUMXth century and which have decimated this species. The disappearance of oysters has caused serious consequences for the marine habitats of the Scottish Highlands, as they are able to filter considerable quantities of water every day, purifying marine environments in favor of animal and plant species which, in order to live, need clear water in which light can filter. Furthermore, the oyster beds appear as living coral reefs which shelter many underwater species. This project is still in its initial planning stage: we at Viva Digital have chosen to support it financially to allow the team to Mossy Earth to implement concrete actions in the coming months.

Tell the Green Initiatives that we support represents an opportunity for us at Viva Digital to invite all our readers to commit themselves to reducing their environmental impact. Sometimes small actions are enough, like supporting an association like Mossy Earth.
