Restoring the habitat of rare butterflies: our commitment to biodiversity with Mossy Earth

A year ago we started our adventure alongside Mossy Earth, a born non-profit organization that is committed to fighting deforestation, protecting biodiversity and counter the effects of climate change. In fact, we wanted to neutralize our impact on the environment and offset the CO2 emissions produced through our work, with the aim of becoming Carbon Neutral.

In this year we have therefore supported several reforestation and rewilding programs, spread throughout Europe and Africa, thus contributing to the planting of new trees and the restoration of natural habitats that had been damaged by human activity.

Restoring the natural habitat of rare butterflies in Slovakia

Over the past two months, we have chosen to fund several projects through our donations to Mossy Earth. Among these, the one that most caught our interest is the project dedicated to the restoration of the natural habitat of some species of butterflies rare in Slovakia.

Indeed, butterflies, one of nature's most beautiful and fascinating creations, require specific food and environmental conditions in order to complete their life cycle. Unfortunately, in many areas of Europe, changes in grazing practices and forest conditions are threatening large populations of butterflies whose numbers are drastically declining.

The Mossy Earth project focuses on the Beckovske Skalice area, near the Beckov castle, in a western region of Slovakia. The aim is to promote the conservation of pastures and to remove shrubs from uncultivated meadows in order to improve the living conditions of plants that host butterflies. Local partner of this interesting project is BROZ, a Slovak regional association formed by a group of professional conservationists and interested in the restoration of forests, meadows and wetlands in the Danube region and the Carpathians.

This particular rewilding operation it does not aim to remove human pressure from the Beckovske Skalice area but sets the objective of restoring a more careful management of the territory by man in order to make its impact on biodiversity positive.

Why is rewilding so important?

Thanks to Mossy Earth we have understood the importance of rewilding which represents a revolutionary branch of conservation and is based on the principle according to which nature is able to regulate itself with minimal human intervention. The rewilding activities undertaken in the last decade have proven their effectiveness: impoverished landscapes have in fact been transformed into ecosystems in which biodiversity thrives.

Rewilding can also take place on any scale: each of us can therefore begin a process of restoring the natural ecosystem starting from our own garden or from the woods located near our property. For larger-scale projects, however, it is possible to support associations such as Mossy Earth which allow, through monthly donations, to finance rewilding operations all over the world with the aim not only of preserving the natural environment but also of reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

We at Viva Digital strongly believe in these projects and for this reason we have chosen to offer everyone who will make a donation to Mossy Earth through this our link a free advice lasting an hour with our founder Marco Scarsella.
