In July 1949 issues of both local and national medical journals, RJ Reynolds asked, How mild can a cigarette be? In answering this question, the advertisement juxtaposed a doctors reportillustrated with a physician, cigarette in hand and head mirror strapped around his browwith a smokers reportillustrated with a smiling Sylvia MacNeill, secretary. Physicians, the advertisement explained, had concluded after scientific investigation that there was not one single case of throat irritation from smoking Camel cigarettes
